CLASSIC BLACK AND WHITE NEWBORN IMAGERY
There is just something special about a beautiful black and white portrait. When I first began to study and experiment with photography I was still in high school and digital photography didn’t exist yet. I learned to take photographs on film and to develop my own images in a darkroom. I had to choose before each roll of film went into my camera if I would be creating color or black and white images. I can close my eyes and still smell the developing solution. I remember the excitement that comes with the anticipation of seeing my images slowly come to life while floating in the developing trays. I could happily spend hours upon hours in the quiet darkness creating my art. My love for film will never end and although digital photography has changed my workflow for most client sessions and allowed me to decide if an image will be color or black and white after it has been taken, I still approach each frame as if it were precious and limited like those on a roll of film.
Someone recently asked me how I know which images should be color and which images should be black and white. My only way of explaining it is that I know as soon as I see an image on my screen during post processing what is “right”. It’s a feeling I get based on the light, the subjects in the portrait and the emotion of each image. This beautiful mother son newborn session included both color and black and white images but every time I go back through their gorgeous gallery, I feel so connected and fall more and more in love with the black and whites.
