What To Expect For Your Newborn Session

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR YOUR NEWBORN SESSION

LUCKY FRIDAY STUDIOS DENVER NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER

After more than a decade of creating beautiful heirlooms for busy families, I’ve established my process to ensure I am able to create authentic images that are a true representation of your family and the love you have for each other. My goal has always been to give my clients a fun, relaxed experience that results in gorgeous artwork you’ll be proud to pass down to your children. I only accept a limited number of maternity, newborn, baby and family sessions each month so that I am able to properly invest the necessary amount of time on each one. I’m honored to be on this journey with you!

Walking you through each step of my process helps me deliver the exceptional experience I’m known for and knowing what to expect during your newborn session can help ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience. From selecting the right photographer to having a plan for how you are going to enjoy your final images, this guide will walk you through every step of my process.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE CHOOSING THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Selecting a newborn photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. It is so important to have someone who specializes in newborn photography, has experience handling infants, and follows safety protocols. It is also incredibly important that my style aligns with your vision! I truly believe that this is the most important way to begin your process. 20 or 30 years from now you probably won’t remember many details from your session, but the artwork from this special time in your lives will last for generations to come.

RESERVE YOUR SESSION

Once you inquire, I’ll send you my full pricing information. I’m always happy to get on a call so we can begin to get to know each other and ensure we are a good fit as well. Your spot with me is reserved once you submit your session or membership fee. If you are booking a newborn session, I ask that you put me on your VIP list and let me know as soon as baby arrives. You will choose the actual date for your session based on how you are feeling at that time.

SESSION & WARDROBE PLANNING

It’s important to me that your session is a beautiful representation of your family. I’ll send over my Portrait Planning & Style Guide right away so you could dive right into the fun stuff, like what you want to wear.  You are welcome to use items from my Client Wardrobe if you'd like along with items from your own wardrobe.  We’ll chat after you start to get an idea of what you are interested in to make sure we're both on the same page with the creative direction for your session!

WHEN TO SCHEDULE YOUR SESSION

Newborn sessions are typically scheduled within the first two weeks of life. During this period, babies are still very sleepy and flexible, making it easier to work with them. However, if your baby is older, don’t worry—we will still capture beautiful images!

FINAL CHECK IN

I’ll touch base a day or 2 before your session to make sure everyone is good to go (that includes Mother Nature). If there is any need to reschedule because of weather, bad roads, illness or anything else, no need to worry! I only accept around 8 clients a month so that I am able to give my clients as much flexibility as possible! I’m a parent too and I’ve got you!

PREPARE FOR YOUR SESSION

To help your session run smoothly, follow these preparation tips:

  1. Don’t Stress Too Much! I’ve been doing this for over 15 years and I give us plenty of time to make sure we can get all of the images you are dreaming of even if baby needs extra time to feed and settle. Your session will be fun!

  2. Keep Baby Well-Fed: A well-fed baby is a happy baby. Try to feed your baby right before the session to ensure they are sleepy and content. If that doesn’t work out schedule wise though, no worries. There is plenty of time to feed your baby during your session.

  3. Dress Baby in Easy-to-Remove Clothing: A simple onesie or outfit that doesn’t go over baby’s head makes it easier to transition them without disturbing their sleep.

  4. Bring Essentials: Have snacks, extra diapers, wipes, and pacifiers on hand. If you aren’t nursing, bring more bottles than you think you’ll need.

  5. Be Ready to Be in the Photos: Even though the focus is on your baby, I love to include parents and siblings in many shots!

If you’ve chosen my studio for your session, it is private and cozy so come prepared to settle in and make yourself at home! I have a private dressing and nursing room, a bathroom inside the studio, a kitchen and plenty of room for little ones to safely run around. You can relax and enjoy drinks and snacks while having fun creating gorgeous images together. A newborn session can last anywhere from 2 to 3 hours, allowing time for feeding, soothing, and changing. Here’s a general breakdown of what to expect

PURCHASE IMAGES & ARTWORK

Within 3 weeks of your session, your fully edited images will be ready for viewing through your private online gallery so you only need to purchase what you love. Instant digital downloads will be available for purchase at this time. Once you purchase the images of your choice, your gallery will remain live so that you can download your favorite images, order any additional products and gifts that you’d like and of course share your gallery with friends and family.

RINSE AND REPEAT!

It’s crazy how fast these little ones grow (especially during a baby’s first year)! If you have a membership with me, the spot for your next milestone session will automatically be reserved for you on my calendar when you are ready to schedule! I’m always available to offer support after your session at any time and am honored that many of my families come back and trust me with annual portraits year after year!

9 Reasons To Rethink Skipping A Maternity Session

9 REASONS TO RETHINK SKIPPING A MATERNITY SESSION

9 REASONS TO RETHINK SKIPPING A MATERNITY SESSION

Pregnancy is one of the most transformative and beautiful journeys a woman can experience. It’s a time filled with anticipation, excitement, and deep emotional connection as you prepare to welcome your little one into the world. While the nine months of pregnancy may feel long at times, they pass by in the blink of an eye. That’s why maternity photography is so important—it allows you to preserve the magic of this special chapter and cherish it forever.

Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, every pregnancy is unique. A maternity photoshoot captures not only your growing belly but also the emotions, love, and excitement that come with expecting a child. If you’re unsure whether you will regret skipping a maternity session, here are the top reasons why it’s truly worthwhile.

1. Celebrate the Beauty of Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of incredible change—both physically and emotionally. While some women embrace their growing belly easily and with confidence, others may struggle with the physical and hormonal shifts. A maternity photoshoot is an opportunity to see yourself in a new light and appreciate the beauty of what your body is creating.

I know how to highlight the glow, elegance, and strength of expectant mothers, ensuring that you feel radiant and empowered in every shot. Years down the line, you’ll look back at these images and be reminded of how incredible your body was in growing and nurturing life.

2. Capture the Bond Between You and Your Baby

The connection between a mother and her unborn child is deeply special. From feeling the first tiny kicks to hearing the heartbeat during ultrasound appointments, pregnancy is filled with intimate moments that strengthen this bond. Maternity photography freezes these moments in time, allowing you to look back and remember what it felt like to carry your baby before they were even born.

Many of my clients say that their maternity photos help them relive the excitement and anticipation they felt leading up to their baby’s arrival. It’s a beautiful way to capture the love you had for your child before you even held them in your arms.

3. Create Lasting Memories for You and Your Child

Imagine your child looking through your maternity photos years from now—seeing how loved and celebrated they were even before birth. These images become a part of your family’s story, something to share with future generations. What I wouldn’t give to have images like this while my mom was pregnant with me!

Just as we cherish baby photos, maternity portraits hold sentimental value and serve as a reminder of where it all began. Your child will one day appreciate these photographs as a glimpse into the time before they entered the world.

4. Involve Your Partner and Family

A maternity photoshoot isn’t just about the expectant mother—it’s an opportunity to celebrate the journey with your partner and family. Including your spouse, older children, or even grandparents and your fur-babies in the session allows you to capture the excitement and love surrounding the arrival of your baby.

For partners, maternity photos are a way to document their role in the journey. Holding the belly, sharing a loving gaze, or simply standing side by side creates powerful images that showcase the strength of your bond. If you have older children, involving them in the photoshoot helps them feel included and excited about their new sibling.

5. A Moment to Pause and Reflect

Pregnancy can be a whirlwind of doctor’s appointments, baby showers, nursery preparations, and endless to-do lists. It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness and forget to take a moment to just be present in the experience.

A maternity photoshoot provides that pause—a chance to slow down and fully embrace this fleeting time. It’s an opportunity to connect with your baby, reflect on the journey so far, and celebrate the miracle of new life.

6. Professional Photography Provides Stunning Results

While candid phone photos are great for everyday moments, professional maternity photography elevates the experience. You’ll never regret having the best, flattering lighting, beautiful studio settings, wardrobe, and expert editing to create timeless images that you’ll be proud to display.

A professional session also ensures that you feel comfortable and confident. I am happy to guide you through poses, help with wardrobe choices, and create an environment where you can truly shine. The result? Breathtaking images that showcase your pregnancy in the most beautiful way possible.

7. Boost Your Confidence and Self-Love

Many women experience mixed emotions about their changing bodies during pregnancy. Some struggle with weight gain, stretch marks, or discomfort, making it easy to feel less confident. However, maternity photography allows you to see yourself in a new, positive light.

With the right styling, lighting, and posing, you’ll see just how strong, graceful, and radiant you truly are. Many moms-to-be find that a maternity photoshoot boosts their confidence and helps them embrace the changes happening in their bodies. It’s a powerful way to celebrate the journey rather than focus on insecurities.

8. A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

Unlike birthdays or anniversaries, pregnancy is a once-in-a-lifetime event for each baby you carry. You may never experience the same emotions, cravings, or belly flutters again in exactly the same way. That’s what makes capturing this moment so incredibly special.

Years from now, you’ll be grateful that you took the time to document this journey. The emotions, excitement, and joy you feel now will live on through your maternity photos, allowing you to relive the experience long after your baby has grown.

9. Perfect for Announcements and Keepsakes

Maternity photos are perfect for pregnancy announcements, gender reveals, and baby shower invitations. Many parents love sharing these images with friends and family to celebrate the upcoming arrival of their little one.

Additionally, these photos make for stunning keepsakes—whether in a framed print, a beautiful album, or a digital collection. They serve as a reminder of a time that was filled with hope, love, and anticipation.

Final Thoughts: Why Maternity Photography Is Worth It

Maternity photography isn’t just about taking pictures—it’s about celebrating the journey of motherhood, embracing the beauty of pregnancy, and creating lasting memories for generations to come.

It’s a chance to honor the incredible changes your body is going through, strengthen your connection with your baby, and freeze this special moment in time. Whether you choose an intimate studio session, a dreamy outdoor shoot, or a casual lifestyle session at home, maternity photography is an investment in memories that you’ll cherish forever.

if you’re expecting, don’t hesitate to book that maternity session. You deserve to see yourself as the beautiful, strong, and radiant mother that you are.

The Best Time To Do Newborn Photos

THE BEST TIME TO DO NEWBORN PHOTOS

A GUIDE FOR NEW PARENTS

The Best Time to Do Newborn Photos: A Guide for NEW Parents

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most magical experiences in life. Those tiny fingers, delicate features, and sweet newborn expressions change so quickly, making a newborn session one of the most amazing and important way to preserve these precious early days. If you’re considering scheduling a newborn photo session, you may be wondering: when is the best time to capture these beautiful memories?

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the ideal timeframe for newborn portraits, what to expect at different stages, and tips for ensuring a successful session.

The Ideal Time for Newborn Photography: Days 1 to 14

The best time to photograph a newborn is typically within the first 14 days after birth. Here’s why:

  • Sleepy and Curled Up – In the first two weeks, newborns sleep deeply and naturally curl up in fetal positions, making it easier to get through a session and document how tiny they are.

  • Minimal Skin Issues – Newborns are born with soft, smooth skin. Around the two-week mark, some babies develop baby acne, peeling skin, or other minor blemishes, which can make editing more challenging.

  • Fewer Startle Reflexes – Younger babies tend to be less fidgety, with fewer sudden movements, making it easier to capture calm, peaceful images.

Because of these factors, I recommend booking your session well before birth and scheduling it within the first two weeks of life.

What If You Miss the Two-Week Window?

While the first two weeks are ideal, that doesn’t mean you can’t get beautiful photos if your baby is a little older! Here’s what to expect at different stages:

2 to 6 Weeks Old

  • Babies become more alert and start to stretch out, so your session might last a bit longer.

  • You’ll likely get more awake shots with cute expressions and eye contact.

  • Some newborn characteristics, such as the tiny curled-up look, may start to fade.

  • This stage is great for a mix of awake and sleeping portraits.

6 Weeks to 3 Months Old

  • Babies are more interactive, smiling, and beginning to show personality.

  • Classic newborn poses are usually not possible, but you can capture sweet expressions and interactions with parents.

  • Tummy time shots and family lifestyle sessions work beautifully at this stage.

3+ Months Old

  • Babies start to push up during tummy time, hold their heads up, and develop chubby cheeks and expressive eyes.

  • You’ll capture plenty of giggles and cute reactions!

  • While it’s no longer a “newborn” session, this is a wonderful milestone to document.

Tips for a Successful Newborn Photo Session

To make the most of your newborn photography experience, follow these simple tips:

1. Schedule Early

I sometimes book up months in advance, so it’s best to schedule your session during your pregnancy—ideally in your second or third trimester. Once your baby arrives, we can finalize the exact session date based on how you are feeling at that time.

2. Choose the Right Time of Day

Morning sessions often work best since babies tend to be sleepier and more settled. A well-rested baby is easier to work with and more likely to stay calm throughout the session. I like to aim for around 10 a.m.

3. Keep the Room Warm

Newborns are used to the warmth of the womb, so keeping the room at a comfortable temperature (around 75-80°F) can help them stay cozy and relaxed.

4. Feed Your Baby Before the Session

A full baby is a happy baby! Try to feed your little one right before the session to ensure they are calm and sleepy. Be prepared for feeding breaks if needed. I always reserve the studio for you with ample time in case your baby needs a bit of extra time for feeding and settling.

5. Dress Baby in Loose Clothing

Avoid tight clothing or anything that needs to be pulled over the head before your session, as it can leave marks on the baby’s skin. Instead, opt for a loose-fitting onesie that can be easily removed.

6. Be Patient and Relaxed

Newborn sessions can take time—typically 2 to 3 hours—to allow for feeding, soothing, and settling. Babies can be unpredictable, and that’s okay! A relaxed atmosphere helps ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.

Final Thoughts

The best time to do newborn photos is within the first two weeks after birth when babies are sleepiest, easiest to pose, and still have that fresh, newborn look. However, if you miss this window, don’t stress! Every stage of your baby’s development is beautiful and worth capturing.

Whether you choose a single newborn session or join my milestones membership to document your baby’s first year, what matters most is preserving these precious moments. They grow so fast—don’t miss the chance to document this incredible time in your baby’s life!

9 Advantages To Having Your Next Session In The Studio

LIGHT & AIRY DENVER PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO

WHY STUDIO SESSIONS ARE THE BEST!

I love being able to offer my clients portrait sessions in a beautiful, light and airy white studio. Today, I’m going to share some of the great reasons to choose my studio for your upcoming session.

  1. No Weather Worries!

Colorado has earned itself quite the reputation for unpredictable weather. They say if you don’t like the weather here, wait 10 minutes or drive 10 miles - because weather around here can be crazy and change quickly. Unfortunately, that isn’t really a solution when you have your photo session scheduled. In the 14+ years I’ve been in business as a professional photographer, I’ve lost track of the times I’ve had to deal with wind, rain, hail and snow interrupting or forcing me to reschedule a session. This is especially frustrating for clients who have hired my team of hair and makeup professionals to help them look their best. Choosing to do your session in the studio takes away the stress of potential weather issues year round. Unless it’s unsafe to be on the roads or too dark outside, your session is on.

2. Amazing Light

Oh, the beautiful studio light! Light is the most important thing I plan for when I’m photographing you. My studio is all white with tons of windows that let in gorgeous, even, natural light throughout the day. Creating images in the studio allows me to easily photograph you in a variety of lighting situations including being backlit. The result of me photographing in the studio is consistent, beautifully lit images every time and the reason my clients choose me.

3. A Clean, Modern Background

Creating images in a clean, all white studio is a beautiful way to keep the focus on you and the amazing connection you have with your family. There’s no clutter or distracting items that might take away from the simplicity of the portraits.

4. Privacy

My private studio is not available for rent by the public so you can rest easy knowing that our time together on the top floor of my building offers complete privacy. There are never other clients there at the same time as you so you can relax knowing that your time with me will be quiet and uninterrupted. This makes the studio the perfect choice for intimate maternity sessions/maternity boudoir. The studio also features a private dressing and nursing room and on-suite restroom so you can alternate outfits easily and feed your baby comfortably.

5. Convenience

The studio offers all of the conveniences of home and the added bonus that you don’t have to clean it before your session! There is plenty of comfortable seating, a kitchen stocked with refreshments, refrigerator and on-suite restroom.

6. Fewer Distractions

Another luxury of photographing in the studio is having the whole place to yourself so there are no distractions. This allows you to feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera knowing that there aren’t a bunch of strangers passing by watching you. It can also help keep little ones engaged in the session because they aren’t surrounded by their toys, televisions or exciting outdoor locations that might entice them to run off to play.

7. Safety

The health and safety of my clients is always my top priority. The studio is located in a wonderful area, just 1 mile west of Park Meadows Mall. It is cleaned and sanitized regularly and the perfect setting for crawling and toddling babies to be able to get down on the floor for adorable milestone images without worry of them getting dirty or finding something from nature to explore with their mouth. There is also no worry of running into any of Colorado’s dangerous wildlife (ticks, snakes, mountain lions or bears) during a studio session.

8. Furniture & Wardrobe Options

The studio has a lovely selection of furniture, custom hand painted backdrops and wardrobe that I can incorporate in your session. There is even a farmhouse sink for cleaning up after a first birthday cake smash! Adding in a few different pieces of studio furniture and specially curated clothing items for moms, young ladies and babies is a wonderful way to add variety and interest to your final gallery of images.

9. Easy Access & Parking

My studio is conveniently located with easy access and plenty of close parking available right in front of the building entrance. There is an elevator at the front doors for anyone who needs it and allows you to bring your stroller. It’s especially convenient for pregnant moms and new moms who may be recovering from birth and don’t feel up to long walks on uneven ground or stairs.

Valentine’s Date Ideas When You Are Expecting in Denver

MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY DENVER

VALENTINE’S DATE IDEAS WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING IN DENVER!

Valentine’s Day is a sweet and fun excuse for couples to spend some special time together, but when you are expecting it might feel stressful to figure out the best way to celebrate.  Maybe you want a fun new way to enjoy this “Hallmark” holiday that doesn’t include watching everyone enjoy the champagne or wine that you can’t have with dinner.  Or maybe you’re feeling like there might be a better way to spend the money you’d typically blow on chocolate and roses that will be gone within the week by giving yourselves an experience or memory.  Regardless what you choose, it’s important to carve out time for each other and nurture your connection and Denver offers plenty of romantic and meaningful date ideas that allow expecting couples to bond before your world changes forever.

1. Picnic at City Park

Perfect for relaxing and enjoying each other’s company in nature

City Park is one of Denver's most beautiful and spacious parks, making it the perfect setting for a romantic picnic (who says you can’t picnic in the winter?!). Pack a blanket, some of your favorite snacks, and enjoy the tranquility of this lush green space. You can relax by the water, watch the ducks, or even visit the nearby Denver Zoo or the Museum of Nature & Science for a little post-picnic adventure. It’s the perfect place to unwind and share your excitement about the future.

2. Couples' Massage at a Spa

Treat yourselves to relaxation and pampering

Pregnancy can be tough on the body, so treating yourselves to a couples' massage is an ideal way to relax and rejuvenate. Many Denver spas offer prenatal massages tailored to the needs of expecting mothers. These massages help ease muscle tension, reduce stress, and provide a calm moment of relaxation. You and your partner can enjoy a peaceful experience together and leave feeling refreshed. Some of the best around include…

3. Sunset Stroll Along the Cherry Creek Trail

Enjoy nature and connect with each other on a relaxing walk

The Cherry Creek Trail offers a peaceful escape from city life. Whether you’re walking hand-in-hand or just enjoying a moment of quiet together, the trail offers a stunning backdrop with views of the creek, wildlife, and the city skyline. Take a sunset stroll to witness breathtaking views of Denver and let the natural beauty set the mood for a serene evening.

4. Brunch at a Cozy Café

Indulge in delicious food while picking out baby names!

Skip the traditional Valentine’s Day dinner crowds and opt for brunch instead!  Denver is home to a thriving café scene perfect for an intimate morning date. Whether you're craving pancakes, avocado toast, or Egg’s Benedict (my personal favorite), there’s something for every couple to enjoy. A relaxed brunch provides the ideal opportunity to savor each other's company and chat about all the exciting moments ahead.  Some of my family’s favorites are…

5. Visit the Denver Botanic Gardens

Spend a day immersed in beauty and tranquility

The Denver Botanic Gardens is an idyllic escape, offering stunning seasonal displays and serene gardens to explore. Whether you’re wandering through the Japanese Garden, relaxing by the pond, or simply enjoying the colors and scents of the flowers, this is a perfect place for expecting couples to slow down and connect. Plus, the gardens offer a peaceful atmosphere where you can reflect on the next chapter in your life.  Choose from the original York Street location or check out the botanic gardens at Chatfield Farms for those south of the city.

6. Take a Scenic Drive to Red Rocks

Experience breathtaking views while taking in nature’s beauty

For a bit of adventure, take a scenic drive up to Red Rocks Amphitheater. Just a short drive outside Denver, this lookout offers spectacular panoramic views of the city and surrounding areas. You can stop along the way to take in the scenery, hike around the area, or simply enjoy each other’s company in a peaceful natural setting.  If you aren’t feeling ambitious enough to take on the many stairs located at an elevation of 6,450 ft., I won’t judge you for driving to the very top parking lot so you can avoid them!  Rumor has it that running all 69 rows, back and forth, to the top is 2.7 miles!!!

7. Attend a Prenatal Yoga Class Together

Stay active and connected with mindful relaxation

Prenatal yoga is an excellent way for expecting couples to relax, stretch, and focus on their breath. Denver boasts a variety of yoga studios offering specialized classes for expecting parents. Prenatal yoga can help ease pregnancy discomforts and foster relaxation and connection. Join a class together and use this time to bond while preparing your bodies and minds for parenthood.

Whether you're enjoying a scenic view, pampering yourselves, or simply strolling through a peaceful park, Denver provides a wealth of date ideas perfect for expecting couples. Take the time to relax, connect, and create lasting memories before your little one arrives. Every moment you spend together is a chance to strengthen your relationship and prepare for the next big chapter in your life!
